Equipment

There is much more to radio activities, than just the radios themselves. Yes, you must consider the type of radio, such as ham, GMRS, shortwave, etc. But one must also take into consideration the form factor and intended application, such as handheld, mobile, and base stations; indoor use versus outdoors, or even wet environments. But none of these radios are of any use without antennas to receive and emit radio waves, and the cables that connect the antennas to the radios. And none of those radios will function without a source of power; in the case of reusable batteries, a means of recharging them is also required.

Antennas and systems need to be tuned for nominal operation, requiring meters to take measurements, and tools to make adjustments. Equipment may need occasional repair, sometimes, while out in the field. Many find computers to be an indispensable support tool. And if you are going anywhere, you need a means of carrying the stuff you need. Even home-based indoor stations need a comfortable space in which to work.
